Dear Congregations,
After over a year of dedication and diligently completing the Eco Church survey, the congregation in the PAB of East England has achieved Bronze status since June.
Although the entire congregation has actively participated, special praise goes to Andreas and Kerstin. From the very beginning, they sought contact with me and continuously brought the topic of sustainability to the forefront of the church’s agenda. In church council meetings, it is now a regular item on the agenda.
I asked them about their motivation and how their efforts were received by the congregation members.
What inspired you to take the initiative for the Eco Church project and to keep driving it forward?
Kerstin: It’s partly a feeling of guilt and conscience. We live in the Western world, entangled in exploitation and environmental pollution. As Christians, we are called to preserve God’s good creation. That motivates us to reflect on our actions and make better use of opportunities.
Andreas: Ecology and environmentally conscious action are crucial topics for us as Christians. It's part of our integrity and a global necessity. The Eco Church initiative is a fantastic opportunity to put these beliefs into practice.
How was your “activism” received by the congregation?
Kerstin: Appreciatively and supportively. Everyone recognises the increasing urgency of these issues, and they were glad that we were taking action. I’m curious to see how the Bronze Award will be received when it’s presented.
Andreas: I completely agree. As far as I know, there have been no critical voices against this initiative, only positive and supportive feedback. It’s important for the church to take a stand here.
After completing the form for the first time, which areas did you focus on?
Kerstin: When I filled out the form for the first time, I was pleased to see that, as a Christian community, we were already doing well in terms of raising awareness and public engagement. Whether at harvest festivals, in intercessions, in the church newsletter, or children's church, the topic is either already part of our consciousness or is being brought to the forefront.
Andreas: It was important for us to have a clear overview of what was already happening so that we could plan the next steps. We need a clear analysis of our behaviour—how we recycle, what we buy, and where we shop.
What are you planning next?
Kerstin: We would like to aim for the Silver Award, and we’re prepared to work towards it. The building is our biggest challenge. It needs insulation, solar panels, and double glazing. There’s a lot to do, and we’re short on people who can help.
Andreas: Exactly. It’s a larger project but achievable. We’ll look into what subsidies are available. It would be great if people could give us tips and advice.
What advice would you give to other PABs?
Kerstin: It’s not difficult at all. It’s educational, interesting, and motivating.
Andreas: It gives you a clear overview of what’s possible with relatively small and simple steps.
Their dedication and the congregation’s feedback show that commitment to sustainability is not only possible but also rewarding and appreciated by the community.
New Version of the Eco Church Form
Since 8th October, there has been a new version of the Eco Church survey form. The old form can still be used until the end of 2024. So, if you have a good chance of achieving Bronze or Silver status by 31st December, it’s worth quickly implementing your plans for a more eco-friendly congregational life.
What has changed in the new form?
The number of questions has been slightly reduced in some sections, and many now include integrated examples and explanations. The most significant difference is in the buildings section, which no longer distinguishes between different parts of the building, even though there is only one fewer question overall.
In the additional “Confirmation” section, you must indicate whether you are aiming for Bronze, Silver, or Gold.
I wish all congregations the best of luck in your efforts and am happy to support you in filling out the form and answering any questions you may have.
Lutz
