In the name of the Synod of the German-speaking congregations in Great Britain, we join the petition of the International Bonhoeffer Society as well as the open letter from the Bonhoeffer family. Bonhoeffer worked in the present-day pastoral area of East London from 1933 to 1935, and his legacy and memory remain very much alive among us. The church of the congregation where he served as pastor in Sydenham bears his name, and people in all our communities consciously draw upon his heritage.
We strongly condemn the appropriation and distortion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s legacy by political movements that misuse his Christian message for nationalistic or violent purposes. Bonhoeffer’s call for peace and reconciliation must not be exploited for ideological interests.
